The Wednesday Poem

My life is driven by the desire
to jump from ever higher ledges
and land even softer –
one day I will jump from the moon
and not even disturb the sand

On occasional Wednesdays
I speak my offering into an incense-burner …
the curly wisps of scented smoke
travel out my study window and head east
for there they feel more at home
in the earlier rising sun

The mad people from the north
look at me with disdain
and fire their technologies at my soul
wishing it to wither and die – but it refuses

The thing controlled can only brace itself for survival
but the one walking free
aims for the next higher ledge
and asks: “how can I land more softly?”
